Shingles: N/Virus: Y: Shingles cannot be passed from one person to another. However, the virus that causes shingles, the varicella zoster virus, can be spread from a person with active shingles to a person who has never had chickenpox. The varicella zoster virus is spread through direct contact with fluid from the rash blisters.

Unlikely an issue: A properly vaccinated kid would have about a 5 % risk of ever getting varicella.Ophthalmic shingles is only contagious through the debris from the lesions, not though droplets like regular chickenpox. If the vaccinated child did not have direct contact with the lesions or debris there would be no risk of infection.

Unlikely to happen: Those with shingles are not as contagious as a those with cpx. Only the debris from active sores contain the virus, not the saliva or a cough.If you are an adult, it is likely you had cpx as a kid, even if you don't remember it, and would never get it again.

Not really: Chicken pox and shingles are of the same zoster virus. If a person has no good immunity to the zoster virus (never caught chicken pox, is immunosuppressed, never got the vaccine, or got the vaccine but did not make enough antibodies) then he can get a case of chicken pox from the virus in the skin lesions of the shingles. He cannot catch shingles but can later develop it after he has chicken pox.

Yes: Shingles is a marker that your immune system is not working at its best - that;s why the sleeping or jailed chickenpox virus is able to escape its leash and show itself as shingles.  By same token, other bacteria nd virus can take advantage of your immune system's weakened state and you can end up with other infections to defend against.

Possibly: Most patients with shingles do not contract other infections despite the immune alteration that led to developing shingles. Rarely, shingles lesions might develop a secondary bacterial infection.

Maybe: Shingles is the emergence of hibernating germs from a past case of chickenpox. It is not as contagious as Cpx, not passing in saliva or a cough, but the germs in the weeping debris could cause Cpx. If your kids have had it or the vaccine, they are immune. Good hand washing and covering the wounds can prevent germ spread. The kids won't get "shingles" from your dad.

No data: There are no studies of which I am aware that would document this.  Assuming that you were taking Acyclovir or one of its salts orally it is conceivable that this would reduce the risk of infection, but cannot prove this to be correct without a dedicated study, and cannot imagine such a study being approved by human investigation committees.

Shingles = herpes: Shingles is a reactivation of herpes zoster also known as varicella zoster virus (VZV) which causes chickenpox, typically as a child. So the first infection is known as chickenpox which then goes away, actually laying dormant in some nerve root. Upon reactivation, it wanders down nerve & manifests as a stripe of painful blisters known as shingles. Vzv is not same as hsv or herpes simplex virus.
