will a urine infection test detect something in your blood?

Accepted Answer

No. But,: Urine infection test is urinalysis with added culture if urine has blood, white cells(pus cells), or bacteria.  If there is infection in blood, this test dose not detect it. But, sometimes, urine infection goes to blood in cases of kidney infection or urosepsis (sepsis from urine source). In these cases the bacteria that is found in the urine usually, not always, matches what's in the blood.

Accepted Answer

Yes, but...: Yes, you can go back and get a repeat urinalysis as a "test of cure", but often that is not necessary if you are now feeling well and asymptomatic.  However, if you have a problem with recurrent infections or some kind of immunocompromise, then a follow is probably a good idea.

Recurring cystitis: Assuming that you've had a complete urologic work-up and it was normal, it is likely that your bladder lining is simply prone to bacterial infection.  More of a problem when a women becomes sexually active ( that is when bacteria get from vagina to urethra and bladder).  Urinate after intercourse and try drinking a daily glass of cranberry juice.  You may need low dose antibiotics for prevention.

Urine: Have no way of knowing what is floating in your urine, but unless you are symptomatic in some way it is probably of no consequence. If you really want to find out what this is take a urine specimen to your doctor or a laboratory and have it examined professionally. Good luck.

Mostly: Nitrite reagent in dipstick works for most gram negative organisms, but does show gram positive bacteria like enterococcus, staphlococcus or streptococcus etc.. Latter 2 are considered "skin" organisms but can be cause of utis in some, especially subjects on intermittent catheterization. Leucoocte esterase for wbcs in urine usually but, not always reliable. Urine culture is most reliable.

Urinalysis: Generally, we accept no more than 2 white cells in the macroscopic exam. More cells than that are abnormal and often reflect a urinary tract infection. I would definitely repeat the test (it is inexpensive) to make sure it was a "clean" catch, but if it is still abnormal, your provider will want to send a sample for culture to determine the proper antibiotic treatment.

Maybe visible: Most likely means you didn't wipe as well as you needed to before passing urine into the cup. They are just skin cells. Not to worry.

No way: Absolutely not. This is not a sexually transmitted bacteria, and no STD is ever transmitted by hand-genital contact. This bacteria is from your own intestinal tract.

i have a recurrent e. coli urine infection for over a year now. alongside a recurrent case of what i believed was bv but after numerous tests, coming back negative still no closer to the cause. i believe they must be connected what std could it be?

Chronic UTI: A year long urinary tract infection requires a Urologist to identify the cause if the UTI if documented on each occasion and is non responsive to antibiotic Rx. Most causes in females are due to urethral/vaginal/anal proximity or obstruction. If your vulvar hygiene is without reproach, then further Urologic testing is appropriate. STD negative testing will rule that out as a cause.
