In a way: About 80% of the us has been exposed to herpes simplex type 1 (hsv-1) and about 30% to hsv-2. Many people have never had cold sores or genital lesions and have no idea they were exposed unless someone tests their antibodies to these viruses. Once you have herpes it lives in your nerves and might reactivate with stress or other events that decrease the immune system.

Antigen or antibody: While it is true that some immune suppressed people have a delayed antibody response to an infection, detecting an antigen or, more likely, dna or RNA of a virus (herpes has dna) is not delayed.

Accepted Answer

No: All forms of herpes are caused by a virus that lies latent in the body until it decides to cause external lesions. Once you have the virus it remains in the body and the strength of your immune system plays a role in whether you will exhibit lesions or not. Having one kind does not keep you from having another and actually makes you more likely to have breakouts in multiple areas.

i am asymptomatic hsv1+2. ive never had any outbreaks nor taken the medicine suggested. i stay relatively stress free, i meditate 2-3x/day as well as pray, and my immune system is very strong, it self-cured hepc. what are my odds of spreading herpes?

: If truly positive for HSV2, even without outbreaks, sexual transmission to partners definitely is possible. HSV1 is less frequently transmitted in absence of outbreaks. Many positive HSV2 blood test results are false -- it depends on the numerical value of the test result. You may need confirmatory testing. Find a doctor or clinic experienced in genital herpes and HSV2. Good luck.

if you have herpes 1/2, why is it possible to spread it to other parts of your body if your immune system already has antibodies for both viruses? does this not act as a vaccine to prevent other places? or does immunity wane and u can spread?

: Herpes viruses do trigger immune system responses, including antibodies and memory cells, but when the immune system is deployed against the virus, it just hides inside of the infected nerve cells and the immune system cannot "see" them nor does the immune system try to attack the nerve cells. Thus the cycle of dormancy and reactivation. The immune system never completely clears the infection.

No: After the initial acquisition, the herpes virus will  inhabit the tissue sector where it starts.It will then go through cycles of shedding &  hibernation. The risk for baby comes from either a primary maternal  infection having a blood phase or any shedding phase where the  baby is exposed to virus.The genital lesions can sometimes be hard to spot & the OB will be on the lookout for activity.

Past exposure: First, remember that hsv-1 is actually quite common as this is the comon "cold sore" on the lip. The antibody in the serum simply implies past exposure. No-one is "mmune" to herpes as the virus can reactivate at times. It is possible for hsv-1 to present as genital herpes, but this is less common as hsv-2.

Yes: Any viral infection can weaken your immune system. Also, a weak immune system increases the risk of recurrent outbreaks of HSV. You need to do things to boost your immune system, like eating right, getting plenty of rest, not smoking. Vitamin supplementation is of questionable benefit, but it wouldn't hurt.

i gave unprotected oral sex to a girl. i heard oral stds are rare unless you have no immune system. is this true? i'm worried bout warts & herpes.

Treatable: This is a very common way to get gonorrhea, less often syphilis and some other stuff, but HIV very seldom.
