hello docs. i was wondering can trapped gas cause severe low back pain?

Sure: Anything that can put pressure on the nerve or structures can cause pain. By gas if you mean flatus, straining can cause venous engorgement and hence back pain.

keep getting twinges of back pain around my waist, seems to alternate between the left and right. feels like trapped gas. is this a cause for concern?

See your doctor: An examination by your doctor may be a good option although if you were to get hydrated VERY WELL over next couple of days, try some heat over the back/flank areas for 20-30 min. at a time and see what happens over next couple of days then, you may improve.  If not, to the doctor who may want to also test you for possible infection of the kidneys or bladder.

: You may want to avoid carbonated beverages and swallow slowly. Your surgeon may be able to suggest other strategies. It is possible to train yourself to relax as best as possible.

Need examination: I don't believe that simple "trapping of gas" is the most likely cause for your symptoms though being gassy can be uncomfortable, no doubt.  I believe you should be examined &amp; a good dietary history along with bathroom habits should be obtained.  You may also benefit from a urinalysis. Fixing the constipation problem certainly could help you even if it doesn't fix the symptoms.

Absolutely: Gas causes expansion of your abdomen and leads to strain on your spine.  Severe constipation can also lead to the same.

Abd pain & bloating: Broad question. Consider allergies such as lactose or gluten. Testing by your doctor may reveal the source. With significant  gas in the large intestine, some discomfort may be felt in the back in addition to abdominal bloating.

Very rare: Pancreatic cancer is not causing your symptoms.
For good health - Have a diet rich in fresh vegetables, fruits, whole grains, milk and milk products, nuts, beans, legumes, lentils and small amounts of lean meats. Avoid saturated fats. Exercise at least 150 minutes/week and increase the intensity of exercise gradually. Do not use tobacco, alcohol, weed or street drugs in any form. 
Practice safe sex.

Gas: Gas is formed from swallowing air, bacterial production or fermentation. Changing your diet and adding good bacteria( probiotics) can help. Simethicone is a medicine used for gas.
