i'm just wondering, if you have a cut, it will heal itself. why can't a tooth cavity heal itself?

Very simple: Your skin is living tissue.. It has cells that can divide and repair damage, like a cut. The enamel and dentin of your tooth is not alive... There are no cells to divide and repair the damage. Only the nerve in the center of the tooth is alive, and if it is traumatized too much, it dies. Your enamel is comprised of an inorganic matrix of calcium and other materials.

Floss, brush, dentis: Besides flossing , brushing ad seeing your dentist every 4 to 6 month, make sure your tooth paste has fluoride. 
Diet is also important . Avoid drinks that have hidden sugar like gatterade and various fruite juice or soft drinks, and sugar.

No, if started: You can slow it down with Fluoride and brushing/flossing but you will not be able to clean it totally out with out a dentist's help.   You can prevent by brushing and flossing and check ups.  Catch them early and less pain or prob.
