can the birth control shot be making me lose my hair?

Possible: Any time there is a significant change in hormone levels, like starting the shot for birth control (or getting pregnant, or after delivery, or starting or stopping birth control pills, etc) the normal cycle of hair growth and replacement can be affected.  The most common change noted is an increase in hair loss - it should be a transient change.  Within a few months the hair loss should stop.

Doubtfull: Though I have heard that happening from a few patients, i'm not sure it is actually caused by the depoprovera, but is usually caused by something else.  For example, many women start the shot after having had a baby, and it is common to lose hair in the first months after having had a baby.

BCP pills and acne: Birth control pills, oral contraceptives, are hormone pills that block the release of an egg, ovum, from a woman's ovary, and thus prevent pregnancy.They have an effect on every aspect of the woman's body that is affected by hormones, like acne, oiliness, perspiration, moods, and hair growth.Some bcps help acne, by having a strong female hormone effect, while others  hurt , a male hormone effect.

i was on birth control well depo provera shot for 4 years and 4 months and im suffering from hair loss, thinning, shedding and balding do you think the dermatologist can get my hair to come back after 12 or more years from suffering from all of this?

: You're correct in consulting a dermatologist to determine whether your hair loss is temporary or permanent, whether there is a medical cause such as thyroid disorder, whether the hair loss is due to medication, whether it's genetic or age related. Any appropriate testing will be done.

yaz made my hair fall out. is it likely that ortho tri cyclin lo or other strong anti-androgen birth control pills will do the same? i have hormonal acne, but just recovered from telogen effluvium. i don't want to lose my hair again.

You have it backward: Androgens cause androgenetic alopecia, not telogen effluvium. Antiandrogen or 5-alpha reductase inhibitor is used to remedy androgenetic alopecia. You need to see a dermatologist and define your problem. There are no "strong" antiandrogen birth control pills. Yaz is weak antiandrogen and orthotricyclen is neutral. You may benefit from spironolactone or dutasteride or both, with or without an OC.

Yes: Birth control pills have been rarely blamed for hair loss, but there are much more common causes for alopecia: stress, low thyroid hormone (hypothyroidism), and heredity, for example.

Yes: Bcp hormonal effects cause both an increase and a decrease in hair growth. You should experience hair loss for approx 3-4 months followed by a period of accelerated growth over 3-4 months.

Certain meds: Most oral birth control is not associated with hair loss, 3 mth injections for birth control have been more commonly associated with this.

Hopefully: Age is on your side, also make sure that there are no other obvious cause for hair thinning, such as anemia, thyroid disorders. For peace of mind, you may opt to consult with a dermatologist

Perhaps: If the hair loss is due to excess testosterone, then birth control can raise a protein called sex hormone binding globulin and bind free testosterone, making it inactive.  It is the same mechanism of action used to treat acne.
