No: There is a very popular belief that sugar makes children hyper. However, there was a very good study, years ago, that disproved the association. The study was actually skewed towards finding that sugar would cause hyperactivity, and it did not.

Not really: It's a little bit of a myth about that. Caffeine and certain dyes certainly can though, i know i've seen it, and parents have done "studies" at home with different products. Sugar though is burned up and dumped out of the system quickly though, so any rise is gone after less than a few minutes to an hour.

Diabetes: Really high blood sugars can cause diabetic ketoacidosis in the mother, which is life threatening. High blood sugars in early pregnancy can increase the risk of having a baby with a birth defect. Late in pregnancy high blood sugars cross the placenta and cause the baby to be overly large. Overly large babies sometimes require a cesarean delivery.  Best to control blood sugars during pregnancy.

Mg/dl ?: If valid this would be a level at which a child is not alert or functioning. Immediate help with a sugary drink like orange juice might raise it to a desired level above 70 mg/dl otherwise a trip to the ER would be in order. Preferably none: Sugar is not a necessary component of anyone's diet, so ideally, a child should be getting no sugar during the day.  But, we all enjoy treats every now and then, so just keep sugar intake to a minimum.

Never really: It is a wives tale unless you are diabetic and your blood sugar rises but it would not cause a rush but make you feel bad!

Unclear question: I am not sure what your question is asking.  Children are less likely to have type 2 diabetes where the intake of excess sugar makes the blood sugar level go up.  While a lot of sugar isn't the best diet in the world, a normal child's blood sugar level will not become abnormally high after a meal with a lot of sugar.

Preferably None: Preferably, no sugar would be given to a child.  Keep it to a bare minimum.

Accepted Answer

Sugar: Jaggery has about the same calories and so not likely to offer much advantage as far as weight loss but would have some added nutritional properties beyond table sugar. You might want to consider stevia or better still avoid sweetening altogether. I tell my patients "most of the time the enemy tastes sweet".

heard you should order sugarfree soda on airplanes (less sticky if kids spill). are sugar replacements ok for kids?

Accepted Answer

No: Artificial sweetners, in general, cannot be considered healthy. Water, if spilled, is not sticky at all! and water is much healthier for airplane travel since it can be dehydrating.
