Efficacy of Plan B: Plan B pills contain a high dose of the active ingredient Levonorgestrel, which is a second generation progestin.  Progestins, just like natural Progesterone cause the uterine endometrium to slough thus causing a period.  It works mainly by stopping the release of an egg from the ovary.
It is possible that it may also work by preventing fertilization of an egg and its attachment to the uterus.

Less effective : The longer after unprotected sex you take it the less effective the Plan B is. 4 days out it still works, but not near as well as taking it the same day. But certainly better than nothing. If you can see a doctor tomorrow to get a copper iud it will work better than everything else.

Probably effective: Plan B is 95% effective if taken within 24 hours after intercourse.  Its intended for use in an emergency so there is not a lot of research on what happens if you take it prior to intercourse.   However, it works by delaying ovulation and it makes sense that it would be equally effective if take just prior to intercourse or just after.  But this is my opinion and not based on research.
