Yes: You can safely take the two medications together. Also safe to use other decongestants like benadryl, (diphenhydramine) but that may make you drowsy. Also could use topical decongestant such as afrin nasal spray, but do not use it for more than 2-3 days, because longer use can make matters worse instead of better.

Studies of cough/cold preparations find they do little if anything in kids under 12. Mucinex can thin the secretions so they are easier to cough out, but the antihistamine containing products like NyQuil thicken them, making them harder to move.
