Carbs vs fat: Metformin decreases the absorption of carbs from your GI tract so if you eat a lot of simple carbs they will stay in your intestine, hold a bunch of water and cause a lot of diarrhea.  If you are avoiding a lot of simple carbs (which you should) and you eat a diet high in fat (which slows your intestines) you will end up severly constipated.  Increase you fluid and fiber to replace the carbs.

Treat the constipati: Diarrhea is a common symptom of metformin but doesn't happen to everyone.  Treat the constipation by increasing water intake, sit the commode for 15-20min after each meal.  If no bowel movement one day then take an enema the next morning.  Add fiber in only if you are taking adequate water; see your physician about other meds that may be causing the constipation.

i was told by my gynecologist on a previous visit that because i can't lose weight with metformin she'll probably be prescribing saxenda. i have yet to start saxenda, but i have ibs-c already and ive heard it causes constipation. what should i do?

: A balanced diet, proper hydration and physical exercise are the main ways of avoiding constipation. When it comes to weight loss diet and physical exercise along with proper rest are best in the long run.
