It can.: Metamucil is a dry fiber. It is recommended to take it with water. If not enough water is taken the fiber will firm up and can constipate.

: Can. I would stop and see what happens.They repeat. If you get stringy stools again, stop and repeat. If you get stringy stools again I would conclude it does in you. But to be really be sure I would repeat 7 more times.  Depending on how certain this is the cause in you.

: It would take more than a couple of tablespoonfuls of Metamucil to cause diarrhea. If Metamucil overuse is the cause of diarrhea it should stop within a day or two of stopping the intake of Metamucil.

Fermented...: Many fibers, particularly the water insoluble kind, are readily fermented by your gut flora. Some people have certain intolerances to bean husks (try beano), to wheat/barley/rye (gluten sensitivity), ;/or have a particularly active population in their gut of gas-forming organisms (try bifidobacter-containing probiotics). Maybe altered GI motility, ibs, air swallowing, maldigestion/malabsorption?
