went to er, i have stomach ulcer and low potassium. was prescribed pepcid (famotidine) and potassium. still have chest pains randomly. what could it be caused by?

Need more info: Chest pain may be due to musculo-skeletal cause, acid reflux, lung or heart disease, esophageal disease and more. It would require taking a detailed history, physical examination may be some tests. It would be prudent to see a primary care doctor for an evaluation. If you are overweight, it would help to lose weight.

Not likely: How low? You need to address the low potassium, but that is not likely to be the cause of chest pain. You are on unusual medications for a 19 year old woman and should see your doctor regularly.

Probably not: A heart attack without major risk factors at 19 is rare - low potassium is not necessarily  normal - make sure that any of your medications couldn't be affecting your potassium - are you having any reflux symptoms ?

Hypokalemia: If she is having hypokalemia she must see her primary doctor to correct the low value.

Usually not: Low potassium may present with muscle weakness, spasm, twitching, fatigue, palpitation, irregular heart beat but not chest pain.

Accepted Answer

Not really: Very high potassium can cause bad heart rhythms, fainting or death.  Usually high ends of normal or slightly higher doesn't do this, but evaluation may be warranted in any event.  The chest pain may be unrelated to your potassium.

Work w/ your doctor: There are many possibilities with chest pain, and i'd recommend you involve your doctor in that evaluation.  It sounds like you've already started a workup with him/her.  Go back for a follow up, ask about the various next steps you might need for your problem.

At bed side: Your surgeon and anesthesiologist should make determination. What is causing your chest pain: is it cardiac, gastric, pneumonia, etc. Talk to your surgeon, in his and your best interests to have all facts reviewed before the surgery.

nail bed infection for 4 wks, low potassium, and having on and off chest pain and tightness. why the chest pain and tightness? related symptoms?

See your doctor: If you had a craniotomy for a fungal infection call your brain surgeon.   I did not see a medication list but you need to be on a prescription medication for the nail infection or a culture.  If your chest pain and tightness is not cardiac and your doctors have assured you it is not, consider costochondritis which is viral.  Otherwise it may be anxiety which is more common.

went to the er again, they said i'm too young to have blood clots. they said i'm low potassium and that chest pain could be muscle spasm?

The ER is wrong if: If the clinical picture is compatible with a pe then a ct with contrast needs to be done. If your symptoms are not compatible, the er is correct.
