You haven't said why: your husband was taking the licorice root. What did he think he was treating? If he has something serious he may be masking the problem rather than treating it. I suggest he make an appointment with a health care professional for a thorough evaluation. Pain is NEVER a good sign even when it goes away quickly and often says there is something bad happening in the body.

Licorice root tea: Anything warm will soothe the throat when it is inflamed. Gargle with warm saltwater 1 to 2 tsp of kosher salt to one quart of water. This will take the pain away. Good luck. Feel better.

Not very: Do not use: Licorice Root contains isoflavin and isoflavine which suppresses the breakdown of cortisol and slows the reuptake of serotonin, which may make it effective for mild depression.  But is also contains glycyrrhizin which can cause potassium levels in the body to fall, leading to arrhythmias, BP increase, or heart failure. This can be deadly. Some recent supplies have also been contaminated with lead.

Low Cortisol: Hello, if you have low cortisol you should get checked by your doctor.  If you're looking at herbal remedies than find a naturopathic doctor or a MD that is familiar with natural remedies.  It could be an adrenal gland problem which are involved with cortisol.  Too much caffeine, not enough sleep, too much stress, these could be factors.  I've read that Siberian ginseng and vitamin C can help.
