: The mantra "don't put anything in your ears but your elbow" is correct. Leave it alone. Whatever you can tease out near the entrance with a wet ear bud is all you should do. If the doc needs to clear something away, they have the proper tools and can do it under direct vision.

Ear cleaning: Hello, i recommend an otc product called debrox. This product has a wax softening agent with peroxide. I recommend patients use this product as directed for 5 days and then see your doctor for an evaluation and possibly for cleaning. As long as you don't have a history of a hole in the eardrum, this measure can be repeated for the first few days of each month to maintain clean ears.

No Q-tips: Don't put anything into your ear to try and scratch it- you are more likely to do more harm than good.  Go to your doctor so they can look directly in your ear canal.

Background noise: When there is competing environmental sounds, the ringing in your ears can be "masked" or drowned out. This is why some physicians recommend the use of noise machines or air fans for those individuals who had difficulty sleeping due to the ringing when in a quiet setting.

: Like the ramrod of a cannon a Q-tip can push the wax up against the eardrum or actually hit it causing pain. If you put it in deeper than the length of the cotton you are asking for trouble. Your doc can look at your ear canal &amp; see if you created a problem.

i used polydexa for 5 days to treat an inflamated ear, it passed for a while, but now the pain is back. should i use the drops again?

See doctor: Best to see a doctor to examine the ear make sure the drum is ok as some of the drops when used for prolonged periods can be harmful if it is.  Also this would allow the doctor to check the pain isn't coming from behind the eardrum which may need a different treatment.

Not my favorite: I have spent 20 years unplugging ears and i never used hydrogen peroxide. Check out drug store, there are a number of overt the counter cerumenolytics that work.
