Herpes simplex: This virus will not infect other people by transmission through unbroken skin.  If there is an ulcer on the finger then the virus can shed and be infective to others.  The virus can be transmitted from an ulcer or infection on mucous membranes through apparently unbroken skin to the person being infected, but we do not know whether the skin did not have some micro breaks in the integument.

Unlikely: If you touched the ulcer directly with a finger which had a wound you might get this, but by secondary transfer this would be quite unusual. Nothing is impossible.

Almost zero chance: Unless the whitlow is open and weeping, there is little if any infection risk. I have never heard of herpes being transmitted by shaking hands. However, it is important that people with herpes whitlow not allow the infected finger come in contact with other persons' eyes, mouth, or genital area, e.g. during sex or foreplay.

: No risk at all. People with HSV are immune to new infections with the same HSV type they already have. They almost never transfer the infection to different body areas. For the same reason, if your genital herpes is HSV2, you will never catch HSV2 again from a sex partner. Don't worry at all about this.

No: No. Hand washing was imperative to avoiding any spread of the herpes lesions.

Herpes: Herpes can be spread by skin-to-skin contact, however, the hand is not the most common place to have herpes.  But yes, the virus is contagious by contact with skin.

No worries: Brief, fleeting contact is never enough to transmit herpes. And there never would be enough virus on a handle or door knob anyway. Herpes is NEVER transmitted by contact with contaminated objects. Even in the households of infected people, sharing kitchens, bathrooms, drinking glasses, towels etc, nobody else ever gets it except by kissing or sexual exposure. So no worries at all!

: Herpes isn't that easily transmitted. This is no risk at all. You'll never catch anyone's genital herpes unless you have sex with that person.

: You're correct in thinking that you can spread the herpes virus by touching an eruption&amp; then touching some skin elsewhere. It's felt that the herpes virus is very fragile when it leaves a cell and that soap and water will kill it. I, myself, would prefer to use rubbing alcohol to kill the virus.

Technically: but wow, would that be UNLIKELY. First, the virus amounts drop fast after the sore opens and by almost gone there is almost no virus. Second, you have some immunity to that virus which is why it lasted 4 to 5 and not many of them, spreading, lasting 2-3 times longer. So, there is strong resistance to getting it elsewhere. Happens, but with fresh virus and DIRECTLY rubbing the virus into new spot.
