Not normally: Swelling of fingers on exposure to cold may be a manifestation of an underlying or latent disorder.  If it occurs regularly, you should see your doctor.

AD: Check with a dermatologist to see if you have a variant of atopic dermatitis. Cold weather can make dry skin worse which is a trigger for dermatitis.

Check it out: This is an area the may be involved in nerve compression which could cause some of the symptoms.  See  your doc.

Dry skin?: Dryness of skin associated with cold weather can cause redness and itching of the skin.  Increase humidity in air and use moisturizing lotion to help this.  Ok to use OTC cortisone cream to help itching.  Also, Raynauds can flare in cold weather, causing redness and swelling.  Keep hands warm to reduce flare ups of this.  Good luck!

Not usually: Increased temperature alone can explain swelling. The blood vessels in the skin dilate so that we can radiate away the heat from out core. Smoking can also be the sign of a disease, allergy or reaction to medication/ Additional history and examination can help. Be certain to ask your doctor.

You may: have a disorder which reacts to cold abnormally (eg: Raynaud's Disease....you need a face to face consultation with your PCP as there are blood tests which are indicated as well.

Sounds like --: This could be raynaud's phenomenon.  The small arteries into the finge go into spasm because of the cold.  This restricts the blood flow causing the whiteness and then the purple.  Sometimes this happens as the only symptom and other times it maybe associated with other conditions.

Variable.: How is the circulation in your hand? Can you feel a pulse? Does it give you sharp or tingling feeling if you press on the 'funny bone' or at the small finger side of your wrist? Do you take meds? Any raynaud's? Keep the hand warm, paraffin baths, mittens, shake hands to get flow going...

Usually not serious: You describe symptoms suggestive of raynaud's phenomenon. Blood vessels of fingers react excessively to cold and blood supply to fingers diminishes. Protect you fingers from cold and quickly warm your fingers.

Does: So does the skin color change also?  It is probably due to extreme vasoconstriction of the blood vessels in response to the cold weather.
