lipid test 1 month ago. i have high cholesterol, triglycerides, & high ldl. i have been walking an hour everyday for about a month now & looking after what i put in my mouth. im also taking blood thinner & statin. when to retest again ?

: All laboratory results need to be interpreted in the clinical context and the doctor who ordered the tests is usually in the best position to do that. Talk to the doctor who ordered the tests. Having said that, retesting at 3-6 months since starting your new routine would be useful.    Wish you good health!

Not true: Blood thinner meds do not cause fissure but can cause bleeding from the fissure.

i am curious if alcohol is a blood thinner then would it cause your blood to not clot?

Accepted Answer

To a degree: Alcohol is noted to be a mild anticoagulant, making the platelets somewhat less likely to "stick together" by various means.
If excessive alcohol intake results in decreased liver function, then the blood will also not clot well because the liver can't make certain blood clotting factors as it should.

is magnesium safe to take with xarelto? sources on internet say it's a blood thinner an may cause blood to become too thick. thanks

There are many: different Magnesium preparations but they should not interact with Xarelto. Be certain you are taking your Xarelto with a meal (preferably supper.)

Lack of clotting: There three mechanisms to control bleeding into the tissue from injury, 1. contraction of blood vessels, 2 Platelet aggregation to form a plug at the site of injury to the vessel, 3. Blood clot formation. If any one these is less than normal bleeding occurs in the tissue. Anti-coagulants impair blood clotting and a side effect is bleeding in the tissue, or easy bruising.

Yes: Hair loss of a variable degree can occur with warfarin (coumadin) use- it can range from thinning to major loss. Typically this is not common and hair regrwoth happens once the blood thinner is stopped. There are newer oral alternatives to warfarin which are available and their use can be discussed with your doctor.

No: No. Liver disease itself can effect blood coagulation.

Not for heart rate: Blood thinners don't really affect heart rate.  Drugs like Coumadin (warfarin) (a powerful blood thinner) would be given to someone with a high risk of blood clots.  Certain heart rhythm problems are significant risk factors for getting blood clots. Aspirin is also a blood thinner and is used to prevent heart attacks.  The blood thinners are probably being given for one of these reasons.

: High blood pressure kills and maims especially in the elderly. Tumeric has not been shown to protect against stroke, MI, kidney failure but BP meds have. Go with the science.

I suspect, because you're so young and male,  that you'll find your risk is too low to justify anticoagulation. Remember, thinning your blood carries risk too, so your doctor balances one risk against the other.
