Yes but: An Aspirin daily can decrease the risk of heart attack by up to 50%.  It is a good idea to speak with your doctor before you start an Aspirin regiment since I do not know your entire medical history.

: This is not a do it yourself matter. You need to consult a doctor who can prescribe the appropriate medication. Both medications have risks and at 22-years of age, there is little likelihood that you have coronary artery disease.

i have coronary artery disease and will be having eye surgery soon my eye doctor wants me to stop the aspirin for a week before surgeon wants me to?

Discuss with doctor: Cataract surgery can be done while taking aspirin, but like all incisional surgeries, the risk of bleeding is increased.  In my practice, i ask the patients who are taking Aspirin to discuss stopping it with the doctor who prescribes it.  We then go with that doctor's recommendation.

i have coronary artery disease and take aspirin everyday i will be having eye surgery soon and my eye doctor wants me to discontinue the aspirin for a week before surgery i am not on any other blood thinners is this safe?

Accepted Answer

Yes it is safe: Probably not necessary if you are taking only 81mgs (baby aspirin). But one week without Aspirin does not cause a problem with coronary disease.  And bleeding from eye surgery is serious, so hold the Aspirin and restart when told and you will be fine from a CAD standpoint.

Accepted Answer

Stress test is good.: Stress test is designed to detect coronary artery disease.  It is not a perfect test, but very good.  If you have a normal test you are very unlikely to have any significant fixed blockage of any coronary artery.  Blockage is not due to high LDL or low HDL - there are associations, but causality is another story.

Echo: Echocardiogram  shows anatomy and physiology but doesn't image the coronaries well. We do a stress test with echo imaging and use wall motion to extrapolate coronary status.

Questionable benefit: The use of Aspirin in this kind of situation has little to no benefit and has fallen out of favor.

is there any good substitute for low dose aspirin therapy(can cause buildup of uric acid) for heart disease?

Accepted Answer

No problem.: Salicylates in low dose will increase uric acid levels. However 81mg of asa would have a neglible effect. Large doses of salicylate lower uric acid. Plavix (clopidogrel) would be an expensive alternative.

NO: I would suggest an annual comprehensive physical exam to include EKG, blood and urine analysis and PSA. You are now old enough to consider colonoscopy.

CAD: Depends on many factors. If you have coronary artery disease which is not highly obstructive and you are on treatment and following a full diet, exercise and medication program, not smoking, controlling your risk factors; you can do quite well. If all your variables are bad, then you have a higher probability of lesser survival. There is no simple formula.
