i have been suffering with "allergies" since  13 october. i went my gp on the 27 of october and he said it is allergies and prescribed a cortisone injection. it has had little or no effect. not even anti histamine  tablets are working. what now?

Allergist: You will need allergy skin testing and a 6 day course od oral prednisone plus Zyrtec-10mg/day.

Every 3-4 months: Usually steroid injections are given only every 3-4 months.

No: Cortisone used for local injections carries little risk. If your dad is diabetic, it can transiently raise his blood sugar.

No: Hip joint injections are best done under ultrasound or fluoroscopic guidance. It is best performed by an orthopedist, rheumatologist or interventional radiologist.

Yes: Steroids are the best way to rapidly shrink nasal polyps.  Steroids are available either in nasal spray or by injection.  Nasal sprays work, but can take many weeks, while the steroid injection can shrink the polyp in a few days.

Minimal: Occasionally, patients have an hour or two of injection site soreness, due to passage of the needle through muscles.  Ice and rest is sufficient to address this pain.

No: Why ask? Do you have shingles? If so, do you have serious underlying disease? Have you been treated? Any transplants, radiation, or chemotherapy? Your age? Details of any symptoms or skin lesions?

Bulging Disc: A bulging disc may not be cause of pain. It is just a finding on and MRI and may not mean anything. In fact, in a review of lumbar mri’s in individuals with no back pain, 54% of people less than 60 had at least 1 bulging disc and 74% of those sixty and older had at least one bulging disc (boden et al, 1990). That being said an epidural block offers relief to many patients with back pain.

can u have bad side affects from a cortisone injection in your spine? headaches

Possibly: The injection could have caused a small leak of spinal fluid and can be giving you a spinal headache.  You should see your pain mgmt doc asap as a simple blood patch could reverse this easily.
