can a friend or a family member donate the saphenous vein for ilial bypass surgery?

Better alternatives: Technically yes. Donated veins ( cadaver ) are used for bypassing arteries of a similar diameter ( primarily leg ). However, long term results are not as good as the patient's own vein or even "artifical tubes".  The iliac artery offers another challenge, it ihas a signicantly larger diameter. Vein can be made into a larger diameter tube but this is time consuming. Other tubes do better, longer.

The bypass tube: The greater saphenous vein and occasionally the lesser saphenous vein ( superficial veins in the leg ) are the usual "tubes" used for coronary artery bypass and frequently for other artery bypass operations.

Weight loss: The veins may be more visible from the weight loss. The benefits of the weight loss however far outweigh the risks of the excess weight. It depends of course how much weight you've lost, when you had the bypass, and your medical conditions.  I would suggest you call your surgeon for a follow-up evaluation and see if they have any suggestions. Hope this helps!

No : Does your father have a heterozygous or a homozygous factor v leiden?
In the setting of no evidence of thrombosis/blood clots- you do not need to get a factor v leiden check. It is mainly a blood work. Your surgery is only local laser surgery - you should be fine. Post-op you should be able to be back on your feet and walk around again. Do not smoke, be active, avoid being sedentary, exercise.

Ask the surgeon: if you have questions about your cardiac bypass surgery, it is best to ask the surgeon who performed the surgery. Collaterals: Often if multiple bypasses are needed, veins are harvested from the leg for use. Post operatively part of rehab is walking and may require compression hose to prevent swelling in the leg till the body replaces the removed vein with new small veins that will take over the job of returning blood to the central circulation. Walking and exercise will encourage the growth that may take multiple months.

CABG in India: Recently most surgeons and their staff are reducing the amount of blood used in cardiac surgery.  Would check with the surgeon to be sure.

friend just had an above knee amputation due to an infected graft in his leg from bypass surgery. he is doing remarkably well post op day 5. what is involved in rehab? when do they (typically) begin pt and ot? what can we expect in the next few weeks?

: Initial rehab will consist of mobility before a prosthesis can be obtained. The residual limb will need to heal-this typically takes weeks and can vary. Finding a good prosthetist in your area is very important-the surgeon can likely recommend one and your friend should see this person ASAP. The prosthetist can work with the surgeon to determine the timing of the prosthesis. Best of luck!
