Depends: Swallowing even one is bad, but probably won't make him too sick.  But the more pieces of gum he eats, and the smaller he is, the more likely he is to get significantly sick.  Nicotine overdoses can cause nausea, vomiting, sweating, flushing and dizziness.  When the dose increases, it can cause irregular heart beats, seizures, or even death.  These should definitely be out of the reach of kids.

: Did you really have a biopsy and lesions have the characteristic features of hairy leukoplakia? If you truly have oral hairy leukoplakia then you are correct about this lesion which is an Epstein-Barr virus-induced lesion that occurs almost entirely in patients infected with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV). GREAT IDEA!: You're certainly on the right track!  quitting smoking is a terrific idea.  Speak with your doctor about whether the gum is recommended for you.  For some people the gum reduces withdrawal symptoms, including nicotine craving. So, it might be a good idea for you as you are getting through the beginning phase of quitting cigarettes and improving your health.  Make a plan and go!

There are some low-cost smoking cessation programs that are publicly sponsored that may offer smoking cessation medications, including gum, lozenges or patches, at low or little cost.  However, even if you cannot get them free, the trade-off for what you are already spending on tobacco, and the savings to your health and longer lifespan, are well worth whatever it costs.

i suffer ocd/anxiety. ct scan showed "diffuse/extensive aortal calcification" and so am now on crestor. i get that nicotine gum may contribute to vascular disease, but it also helps with my ocd. in the short term, does risk outweigh anxiety relief?

Much less than: smoking tobacco.  Nicotine is thought to be the culprit behind cardiovascular disease in smokers, so taking in nicotine by any route, whether nicotine in combusted tobacco, snuff, chewing tobacco or nicotine gum, patches, lozenges etc., over a long period of time, could have some risks.  However, it is almost certainly less harmful than continuing to smoke cigarettes.
