If you have strep throat, antibiotic therapy is imperative to prevent future complications. Consider tylenol (acetaminophen) or nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory medications. Saltwater gargles: mix 1 tsp salt in 8 oz warm water – gargle several times a day. Or gargle with aloe vera juice twice a day.

No: Strep has to be treated with antibiotic. Sore throat is usually caused by virus, may be the presenting symptom of a cold. You can try sore throat losanges, warm tea or Tylenol (acetaminophen). Strep throat usually causes pain with swallowing and fever without any cough. It needs to be treated with antibiotic.

See below: Bad-tasting mucus drainage might come from infected sinuses (do u have any pain or pressure over sinus areas?), throat infection, dental abscess. Any fever? If u have any tooth decay, see dentist. Otherwise, see pcp if fever &/or sinus pain/pressure. May be viral in origin in which case antibiotics are useless but doc can test for strep, which responds to antibiotics.

Yes: It may take 2-6 weeks to return to normal.  Taste can be improved faster with zinc supplementation

Mgt: I would suggest that you see a pulmonary specialist. Some tests that may be ordered include pulmonary function testing, chest imaging and a TB test. Avoid all smoke whenever possible.

Sinus drainage: You can have a sinus infection without stuffiness. The mucus drains down the back of your throat. Use a sinus rinse and Mucinex (guaifenesin) to help.
