i am 10 days post op tonsillectomy and around day 6 i started getting this stinging burning pain near or on my tongue in the back edge left side.

Possible neuritis: There is a possibility that you could be suffering from what is referred to as a glossopharyngeal neuritis or neuralgia depending on the characteristics of your pain (i.e. sharp and transient vs. more continuous and burning).  A neurological examination may be worth while.

Doctor should check: New throat pain can be from a strep throat infection (antibiotics are needed), a cold or influenza (antibiotics usually not used), or from some other cause such as allergies or irritants. Usually, a person sees the doctor if the sore throat is bothersome, recurrent, or doesn't go away quickly (mainly to check for strep). Some throat lozenges, and acetaminophen or ibuprofen temporarily lessen pain.

See if you have tried any new foods lately that could irritate your tongue. If it is red and irritated i would see a dentist to determine the cause.
