Inflammation: Assuming we are talking about your stomach and not your abdomen. Gastritis, stomach ulcers, hunger pangs, reflux.  I would first try a liquid antacid 2 tablespoons (30ml); either maalox or mylanta.  If this does not relieve the symptoms within 30 minutes or if the burning is recurrent then see your doctor for evaluation and treatment.

Symptomatic: treatments such as pepto bismal can be helpful. The main issue is not becoming dehydrated and that there isn't something worse going on. With any abdominal pain, going to the ER for evaluation is probably a good idea.

GERD/Heartburn: Heartburn can be caused by acidic stomach contents backing up into your esophagus. If this happens 2 or more times per week it is called GERD (Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease). Lifestyle changes can ease the symptoms: drink more water, eat smaller meals, avoid trigger foods including fats/hot sauce/coffee) lose weight, stop smoking, sleep with head elevated. A Dr can prescribe meds.

It could be: Several problems could cause abdominal burning sensation but the most common would be stomach irritation (gastritis) or even stomach ulcers. Less likely would be gallbladder problems or other intestinal problems. To figure out the actual cause you may need upper endoscopy (egd) which is very effective at diagnosing ulcers and gastritis and is a quick 5 minute procedure done with light IV sedation.

Stomach Scope: I would make sure you do not have a stomach ulcer with a stomach scope. You should return to your family doc or surgeon and tell them this is going on. I think most likely they wil treat you with acid blockers and possibly do the scope sooner that  later.

i hv mushy stools, burning sensation in stomach, growling, lot of gas. strtd cipro (ciprofloxacin) after walk-in clinic, pcp said i shd stop n use nexium. wht cud it be?

It could be: Constipation. It can even cause diarrhea! it can cause a lot of growling and grumbling noises. Irritation of the stomach is a possibility which could account for burning  which is why the Nexium (esomeprazole)  but that would not explain the mushy stools or the growl.

Yes and no: In the old days prior to the advent of acid blockers in the 1970's, doctors used to recommend drinking a glass of milk every 2 hours. Milk does temporarily neutralize acid, but as any food, it will stimulate more acid production in the stomach as well. In a pinch, it will provide some relief for a short period of time. An hour or two. Hence the advice of drinking some every 2 hours.

May be temporary: Amoxicillin can cause stomach upsets with pain and diarrhea, subsequently because of altered intestinal flora can cause bloating, decreased apetite or burning as in your case. If this persists longer say another 3 weeks you might be having gastritis, where a short course of antacids, or h-2 blockers (like Pepcid (famotidine) ) might alleviate your symptom. You may try otc Tums  to see if your symptoms improve.

Gastroparesis: Sometimes patients develop viral infections that can affect the gastrointestinal tract. The infection can leave residual inflammation that can slow down GI motility. If your symptoms worsen, you should probably cut out fatty meals and see a doctor.
