Hard to say...: Most of the times we don't know what exactly causes lymphoma so there isn't much we can do to prevent it.  Most cases probably have a genetic component but the process is probably multifactorial and many other things need to happen in order to produce lymphoma.  In a small subset of cases, a distinct cause appears to exist: exposure to toxins, radiation, certain viruses (ex: ebv).

You cant tell: You can't really tell unless you have yourself checked by your physician who is going to do serial tests-which would include a biopsy of the node/mass etc. There are many other things that can give you similar presentations as lymphoma i.e. Enlargement of lymph nodes- such as viral infection/ mononocleosis, autoimmune disorder etc. So, the first thing you need to do is to see your physician.
