The mastoid process is a normal bony structure of the skull which is behind, and slightly below the ear.  Lymph nodes are generally rubbery in texture and somewhat motile, while the mastoid is larger, hard, and non-mobile.

Malignancy would be a rare cause.

Their main function is to help clear infections, usually viral and bacterial. Postauricular nodes can enlarge and become painful due to a nearby infection. Other causes are possible so be sure to see your dr if unresolved.
