Maybe you: Got kicked?  Or it could be a herniated disc.  Or something in the pelvic organs.  You need to see a doctor to figure it out.

Highly variable: Deep knee bruises (contusions) have a highly variable recovery timeframe. Not all bruises about the knee are the same. Important variables inlcude: actual location of bruise; level of impacting force applied to cause bruise; whether or not overlying articular cartilage is involved. Best diagnosed and followed by routine mri. Seek evaluation and treatment from your orthopaedic surgeon for your knee.

Exercise Gently: Quote Dr. John Lyftogt: "Rest is not a stimulus for repair." Gentle exercise stimulates blood and lymphatic flow &amp; repair.Go easy. If knee is fractured, a certain amount of rest is required.If pain fails to subside within 3-6 weeks, it may be more than a bruise: fibular displacement or femoral nerve inflammation, for example.Seeing a dr. knowledgeable about chronic injury may then be appropriate.

See ortho: You need to see an orthopedic doctor and perhaps get some physical therapy since this may cause problems with muscle contracture and atrophy.   Make an appt now since permanent damage may already have occurred.

Meniscal tear?: Locking, grinding, giving out with pain may indicate a meniscal tear. Please visit your primary care physician or orthopedic specialist for an examination. Many meniscal tears heal on their own without surgery over time. If not allergic, can take ibuprofen or naproxen OTC for pain. Your ankle sprain will make it easier to reinjure your leg. Please take care. Do you have crutches to use ?

4-6 weeks: A "bone bruise" is actually a fracture or break in the bone within the marrow of the bone that does not extend through the outer shell (a bit like scrambling an egg yoke without breaking the shell). It is not visible on x-ray but can be seen with mri. Because it is a broken bone, the normal healing time in adults is 4-6 weeks.
