Possibly fractured: It's hard to tell without more information. However, if you injured your wrist and not your fingers, black and blue and swelling can be a sign of a fracture. The bruising is from blood seeping down from the injured area, and a fracture is very likely to cause this situation. It is worth having it checked, since some fractures of the wrist do better when treated early.

Yes: While i'm not sure what exact tests were done with the fingerpoke, i assume it was something like a HGB or even a cbc. Those tests would show only one or two reasons for low clotting, ie a low platelet count. However, there are many other reasons for low clotting, like deficiency of clotting factors or enough platelets but them not working right. Your child needs a more thorough workup for problem.

Make up a comprehensive list, review it to make sure you have it all. Have a trusted friend readmit to see if it is clear and concise.Hand it to the nurse or tech before the visit.

Morning : Morning stiffness, particularly of small joints, is a classic symptom of rheumatoid arthritis. Your fmd should be able to run the tests needed to see if this or another type of arthritis is causing your symptoms.

You can't: You need an x-ray to tell.  If finger is sore and swollen get it checked out with an x-ray. Sometimes there is a small fracture that could lead to a bigger problems later on.

Protect it...: There is not much to do. I am at a loss as to how a hangnail could be associated with a bruised finger without some underlying trauma, that you did not describe. Heat and time are the two elements that will move the bruise along it's merry path.

Med Eval: Self- diagnosis is not a good approach. Medical history, X-ray and physical exam normally  can rule in or rule out a fracture &amp; provide an accurate diagnosis.

Unexplained bruising: Bruising for no reason can have several causes.  Some serious.  You need to be checked.  Stop the mefename for now, because it can increase bleeding/bruising.  Stop all vitamins, supplements, and over the counter meds, not okayed by your doc.  Stop alcohol and nicotine (if applicable) as ell.  Get seen this week
