10-14 days: A bruise has a ice cycle of about 10-14 days, in which it changes colors from red to brown and blue until it starts to fade away. If it remains red beyond a week or so, gets swollen or dtsrts to hurt, it may signal infection which may require exam and antibiotics.

Potential causes can include multi level degenerative disc disease, muscle spasm, or multiple level facet arthritis thy to name a few.  There are also inflammatory conditions that affect the spine such as ankylosing spondylitis.
