Irregular periods: Brownish discharge with your periods can be completely normal - it occurs commonly when the rate of bleeding is low, giving the blood time to breakdown and turn brown. There are lots of causes of intermittent or irregular bleeding between periods, and the first step is to make sure you are not pregnant, then get evaluated for vaginal infection -  for treatment, your gynecologist  can help.

Unstable lining: When this happens it's solely due to our hormones.  And uterine lining may be unstable and thus having this spotting before your period and then the discharge after it.  What you describe is very common and if it bothers you, you can consider birth control pills to help regulate your cycle.  Best of luck.

Bacterial vaginosis?: The most common discharge with "fishy" or "rotten" odor  is bacterial vaginosis. BV is overgrowth of mostly normal bacteria. It's not an STD, but more common in women with STDs like gonorrhea and chlamydia. Trichomonas, an STD, can cause similar odor and discharge. Of course chance of STD depends on risk, partner history, etc. BV is easily treated. See a doctor soon for testing, treatment.
