how come i get dark brown discharge while on birth control?

Usually: This can occur due to an effect of the hormones on thinning the uterine lining, and decreasing the amount of tissue that accumulates each month, and some patients develop a brownish discharge that is the shedding of older blood/tissue from the uterine lining. Many different things can cause though.

Many possibilities: Spotting or irregular bleeding is common in the first 3 months of any new pill. Missed pills also cause bleeding, so be sure you're not missing, but spotting/ bleeding can have other causes: pregnancy, fibroids, stds, a polyp.  Bc other than pills may have spotting (the shot, implant, or progestin iud). See your dr to be sure.

Spotting  is not : Uncommon with contraceptives. Brown discharge is usually older, deoxygenated blood.

Birth control : It is normal to have some spotting when you start birth control.  Just keep taking your pills on time.  It should improve after a few packs of pills as long as you don't miss any pills.

Brown discharge: Some irregular spotting and bleeding is not uncommon with the birth control rod.  Brown discharge represents old blood so nothing to worry about.

Brownish discharge: It is likely that you need a stronger dose of hormones in the bcp than the one that your are taking.  Probably the estrogen component is too low.

Norethindrone: Movisse (norethindrone) like other oral contraceptives has potential side effect of light vaginal bleeding or spotting. Brown vaginal discharge is likely old blood being cleaned from the uterus.

Yes: The brown discharge is usually old blood that is related to the hormonal effect of the birth control on the uterus that can cause some spotting. If the discharge is foul smelling it may be an infection that you need to be evaluated for. The discharge usually clears up after you have been in the pill for a few months.

It should go away: Irregular bleeding when first starting the pill is relatively common.  I encourage my patients to stay with any new pill for 3 cycles before changing to a different pill.  If you cannot stand the irregular bleeding, the next step would be to use a pill which contains more estrogen than the one you are currently using.  That change may or may not help in the short term and but should help long term.
