Breast lump:  The risk for breast cancer increases for women in their older years. However, biopsy will be the determinant as to whether the woman's lump is from a malignancy or is benign.

May be cystic breast: You are very young but sounds like family history. Keep your yearly exams. Anyone have breast cancer?  If no then keep doing what you are doing. The tissue seems fibrous and lumpy but not dangerous to you. Sounds hereditary

Xrays - sound waves: Mammography uses x rays to image the breast and ultrasound uses sound waves. Mammography is more sensitive to picking up cancers but does involve small doses of radiation.Us has no side effects, but is not nearly as sensitive in picking up small cancers. Us is best use to characterise a problem that is picked up on examination (or by the patient) or mammo. Very good for determining cyst vs. Solid.

Hemorrhagic Cyst: It is important to know that all of the "lumps" were either simple or minimally complex cysts.  Please verify that with your doctor.

Assuming that is true, the cyst containing fluid and debris is called a minimally complex cyst, and these are often due to hemorrhage.  Clotted blood in the cyst is mostly water (the fluid part) and the clot (cells) are the debris.

Most: palpable lumps turn out benign, probably around 90%, but there is no way to be sure without having the appropriate imaging studies and proceeding from there.

Yes it can happen: They are two different modalities for imaging and can show different findings. That is why we use both so that we can pick up abnormalities seen on one test yet missed on the other test. Any lump  in the breast should be biopsied to exclude breast cancer.

Breast Lump: Negative results are good news.  Unfortunately that does not guarantee that the lump is no a problem.  Most lumps not seen on these tests are not harmful and either normal fibrous tissue or a normal fat deposit.  However the only way to be absolute when a lump is not visualized is to have a biopsy done.  I would suggest you discuss this with your doctor and have it rechecked in a month or two.

Ultrasound varies: Various mhz and tools with sound and imaging and gating for depth and penetration are useful  for breast,  heart, gallbladder etc. Etc.

after finding a breast lump i was referred and had a ultrasound they then did a biopsy does that mean the ultrasound showed bad news?

Accepted Answer

: Not necessarily. It did not provide clear cut results. More than 80% of biopsies show no cancer.
