why is there bloody mucus in my stool after an enema? should i be worried?

Possibly: Blood tinged  discharge can be related to trauma from the enema but it should be evaluated with direct visualization (ie. Colonoscopy or sigmoidoscopy) to make sure it is not related to proctitis (inflammation) or a polyp or cancer.

i had a sinus infection, took an antibiotic. days 5&6 i had severe cramping & diarrhea. 2 days later there is bloody mucus in my stool -is this normal?

Accepted Answer

No: Although having mild diarrhea is not common from taking abx,  bloody mucus is not normal.  Contact your doctor to make sure that you don't have a C difficile infection from the abx. In the future, consider taking a probiotic when on abx.

Doctor can examine: Blood in the stool, trouble pooping, abdominal pain, and constipation are symptoms that need to be evaluated by one's primary care doctor or a gastrointestinal doctor. The cause can be a hemorrhoid, an anal fissure, an infection, etc... Tumors or cancers would be very rare in a teen. If the cause is already known by his doctor, a teen can just follow his doctor's care instructions.

You need stool studies including stool c. Difficile toxin, for a possibe antibiotic associated colitis.

May be low CBC: If symptoms new then one must look into pathology in bowel, with mucus representing draining off a developing lesion.  One should have CAT scan of abdomen followed by colonoscopy.  If a lesion noted procedure will be based on path report of bx of the existing lesion.

Proctitis? Colitis?: You have some sort of serious inflammation of the rectum (proctitis) or colon i.e. lower intestine (colitis). Most likely inflammatory bowel disease, including conditons called ulcerative colitis or Crohn's disease. Or certain infections, including STDs If you've had anal sex. You need to see a doctor about this ASAP. Good luck!
