Mostly: The urine test, if done on the first time you urinate when you wake up is as accurate as a swab in the penis for detecting gonorrhea and chlamydia. A blood test can detect HIV and syphilis provided there has been enough time since being exposed. Some sexually transmitted disease, such as herpes, are not so accurately tested with a simple blood test and need to have cultures or repeat blood tests.

Why?: It's easy to get a herpes blood test--your doctor has just checks the hsv-2 igg box on the order form.  There's no need to see an infectious disease doctor, as much as we love your business.  However, the test will only tell you whether you have the virus, not whether you need treatment.  We only people who have outbreaks, not people with a positive test.  Why get tested? It's not a standard test.

Yes: These serologies aren't altogether sensitive or specific. They're meaningful only with a clinical history.

Let me explain: Standard antibody HIV testing can have two stages. The most commonly used initial screening test is either an enzyme immune assay (eia) or the enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (elisa). If the eia/elisa test is negative, no additional testing is done. If the eia/elisa screening test is positive, that result must be confirmed with a more specific test called "western blot.".
