Cold: There are sources of blood, like the stomach, the lungs and the nose and posterior pharynx. In time of cold or upper respiratory infection, there is mucous which is thicker than the plasma. This draws the fluid from the blood vessels in the nose and the pharynx which are to the surface and they can pop and hence you cough up blood. If possible other causes, please go see your doctor.

Cough with blood: A single episode of cough with blood should not produce too much concern. Common causes include a minimal nose bleed that stops by itself. Usually you would see some evidence of blood on blowing. Bronchitis can cause it. It is really only a concern if it is repetitive (small amount) or occurs in a large amount; then the concern is about possible cancer.

Cough: Your cough is due to a post nasal drip. The mucus is eroding the little blood vessels in your nose causing the mucus to become blood tinged. Use salt water nose drops sprayed into your nose 4 times a day. Us a vaporizer when sleeping. Rub vapo rub on your chest to help your cough.

If bleeding persists beyond a week of trying humidification, see ENT for exam.
Bleeding means broken mucosal lining somewhere.

Need to see Doc.: Chronic cough can be related to allergic rhinitis, post nasal drip, chronic sinus condition, chronic bronchitis, gerd, bronchial asthma, bronchiectesis. Try saline nasal irrigation. Avoid cigarettes smoking. Need evaluation by physician, preferably lung specialist to work up chronic cough if clinically necessary.
