get eva;: Black stripes down one nail could be a subungual hematoma.  Red or brown streaks could be splinter hemorrhages.  Brown/black lines from the nail plate to tip are often seen in people with dark skin &amp; are normal. Subungual Melanoma can cause nail ridges and dark colors of the cuticle. It usually begin in the nail matrix.  It most often effects the thumbs or big toes. Get checked out when in doubt.

: Ice down every few hours .
If thumb swelling stays for a few weeks or more, then an xray may be necessary to ensure you have not broken the thumb

Subungual hematoma: When a nail is crushed or injured, sometimes a hematoma (blood collection) forms beneath the nail.  This can cause pressure on the nail sterile or germinal matrix (the region where nail growth and adhesion occurs).  When doctors see a subungual hematoma (blood beneath the nail), it should be drained through a small hole in the nail.  However, at two weeks, it is too late, and may simply be bruised

i have 2 big warts on the side of each thumb right next to my fingernail and i tried freezing it and it won't go away . help:(?

Ouch! Freezing hurts: I know, I tried it!  You have just as good a chance using over the counter salicylic acid wart removal creams, but you must use them for 6 weeks.  Biofeedback/visualization in children in studies worked well, too.  Think positive as you paint it with the over the counter med.

Don't worry: Not uncommon at this age, don't even try to stop it ,  it will grow back . My son did this and has a normal, although spoon shaped nail, but he is doing well in college.

Probably normal: If you are describing ridges that extend from your cuticle to the tip of your nail they are normal. They tend to become more common as you get older.

Itch: Finger nails, crevices and cuticle itching would make me consider a fungal infection.  However, some type of dry skin process can cause this.  Anxiety and nerve issues can sometime present this way.

Brown fingertips : There are two things that come to mind. Normal pigment from a person of dark color, or melanoma. Fungal infections also cause brown nails. The proper diagnosis comes from an inspection of the nail and doing a good examination

i've got a vertical dark line on both my thumbs' fingernails and one much more lighter on my forefinger's nail . what could it mean?

Nail lines : Multiple nail lines are typically normal. Rarely it may be do to an underlying mole or rarely melanoma skin cancer.  Usually only one nail is involved in cancerous cases. It's best to ask your dermatologist.
