No: If you are having symptoms months after your tonsillectomy I do not think this has anything to do with your surgery. Double check with your ENT or PCP

started with chest/nasal congestion and sore throat when swallowing 2 days ago. started mucinex/claritin. woke up this a.m. with a lot of phlegm being coughed up and it tastes extremely foul and bitter. what causes terrible tasting phlegm? infection?

Doctor can examine: New throat pain can be from a strep throat infection (antibiotics are needed), a cold or influenza (antibiotics usually not used), or from some other cause such as allergies or irritants. Usually, a person sees the doctor if the sore throat is bothersome, recurrent, or doesn't go away quickly (mainly to check for strep). Throat lozenges and Tylenol (acetaminophen)can temporarily decrease pain.

Infection: Foul smelling and bad tasting phlegm is likely a sign of an infection of the sinuses or lungs.  Time for a visit to your primary care physician!

Granny Smith apples: Some of my patients try taking a bite of a granny smith apple and this sometimes helps them.  Hope this helps.  Also eating with plastic utensils can help with the metallic taste.

Take with food: I assume you are sure that it is the medication that is causing the bitter taste. If it is a medication that can be taken with meals, it may help to hide that bitter taste. Not an easy problem to solve.
