With periodic exams: Virtual health care is not "online shopping for prescription medications" and needs each patient to have an in-person doctor to do in-person exams periodically. For example, after an in-person exam has cleared a healthy woman for starting birth control pills, she may be able to get follow-up care online for the rest of that year. Psychiatric meds and certain other drugs are not given on HealthTap.

Ok to take: There are no drug interactions with common combination cold and sinus over the counter medications, such as Advil (ibuprofen) Cold and Sinus which contains Ibuprofen. You can also take Acetominophen.

Often, yes: Some medications are very safe to take, like tylenol (acetaminophen) and motrin. Others, especially prescription antibiotics , may weaken the protection birth control pills give you from getting pregnant.  Make sure you talk to your doctor when you are prescribed a medication.

Several: While on birth control, you should always ask your pharmacist about any possible interactions, even with over the counter or natural medications.  Antibiotics, for example can decrease the efficacy of the birth control, so you should always use condoms when on antibiotics and birth control, to be extra safe.  Good luck.

Article not useful: The article you read is from 2012.  It is based upon absorption of sucralose in the stomachs of rats.  No direct evidence of sucralose impacting birth control in humans.

YES: Anti seizure medications like topamax (topiramate).Phenobarbitol, carbamezaprin
anti fungal meds likegriseofulvin, nystatin
anti anxiety meds like benzodiazepines
hiv meds
antirepressants like prozac.Celexa, zoloft.

Potentially. : Over the counter medications are not subjected to the testing that prescription medications are. Therefore, I can only answer by saying that there is a potential that any over-the-counter medication can affect birth control pills.

Accepted Answer

Absolutely: Many antibiotics will decrease the efficacy of the birth control pills. Alternate means of contraception should be used to avoid pregnancy. Discuss with your prescribing dentist.

i have recently been prescribed hailey 24 fe birth control pills and have been taking them daily and consistently since april 3rd 2022. would they interact at all with my lexapro medication? would the bcp lose its effectiveness?
