Insuff information: Is burning from reflux or constant cough or sore throat?  Home, some hot tea w Honey, breathe in the steam. At pharmacy can try cough remedy like Robitussen(aval generic), esp if it has dextromethorphan good to quiet cough. Also taking fairly warm shower &amp; breathing in warm moisture in the air for a while will help inflamed tissues.

Have you seen doctor: If you have had cough and purulent sputum for over 2 months, you have some kind of serious respiratory infection.  While smokers certainly get more of these, non-smokers can get any kind of infection as well. Your doctor needs to examine you, take a full history, probably get samples of your sputum for testing and probably a Chest Xray or other imaging studies of your lungs. See your doc NOW.

See a physician: You should consult a physician. You did not mention what kind of medication were prescribed and what triggers your cough. You may be suffering from allergies and postnasal drip.. Allergy medication like antihistamine and nasal spray and netipotty sinus rinse can help. Consult a physician or an ENT specialist.

If : If you haven't already done so, i would seek out a good local ENT in your area for a thorough history and exam that could include nasal endoscopy to evaluate for possible sinus origin, indirect mirror or flexible scope exam of your throat, etc. Depending on findings, you may need ct imaging of your sinuses, in the mean time, if your mucous is thick and sticky, Mucinex (guaifenesin) (otc) is a safe medication that can help thin the mucous so it is more easily transported through your upper nasal and sinus passages. Try to drink enough water to stay well hydrated.Gargling with salt water also may help break up some of the phlegm. If you are a smoker this is counterproductive as it incites an inflammatory mucosal response and stimulates more mucous production.

Dry up the mucous: With the extent of mucous and phlegm, the best way to reduce that is with an antihistamine.  In the drug stores, they sell and over the counter medication, diphenhydramine  25mg that you can take every 8 hours.  In addition, you should drink at least 8 glasses of water for help reduce the thickness of the mucous.

i have never been able to cough up phlegm i gag and then vomit. i currently have a chest cold and i can not get rid of the phlegm. any suggestions?

Talk to your doctor : There are a few treatments that can be utilized to clear up phlegm from a cough.  If it's a result of post-nasal drip, for instance, an intranasal steroid (like Flonase) would help. An inhaler bronchodilator (steroid) might also be helpful or even a cough syrup to help with these symptoms. So, it depends on where the phlegm is coming from.
