Metamucil is a fiber supplement you can buy as powder form and mix with water. If you do not wish to take Metamucil, you can always try keeping hydrated and exercise. Narcotics cause constipation and a gentler laxative like Metamucil helps.

There is no "Best": Being "regular" is very important.  There is no single solution for everyone.  Adequate hydration (plenty of fluids), fiber, and stimulation of the colon will usually solve the problem.  Magnesium helps many people.  You can't "od" on magnesium, because it will cause diarrhea.  Usually, 500-1, 500 mg will get you moving.  Some people can handle more.  Prunes are also a good stimulant.

Stool softners eg. Colace or fiber supplements eg. Metamucil, benefiber may also help.  You should be trying to eat 30 grams of fiber per day along with drinking 64+ ounces of water per day.
