It is generally easier to accommodate to travel west... We just adjust our schedules accordingly.

Exposure to bright sunlight is the best method for adjusting to jet-lag.

Optimize all else: If you can't optimize your sleep, at least give yourself the chance to adapt your sleep to a new time zone as possible.  But also, make sure your optimize your activity levels(doesn't mean you have to be in the gym), optimize your eating habits(avoid too much junk food/alcohol) and minimize stress.

Jet lag: Adjust your daily routine few weeks before departure to the time zone to where you are traveling.  If traveling west, try to get at least an hour's worth of sunlight as soon as possible after reaching your destination. Avoid alcohol, caffiene while on plane, keep hydrated and keep moving around the aisle every few hours. Hope that helps.

Melatonin: Ambien (zolpidem) has been studied and found to have some benefit for jet lag, however i generally recommend melatonin taken 30 minutes before the intended bedtime; it is better tolerated and a more natural way to adjust to a new time zone.
