Yes: In dry beriberi, the peripheral neuropathy and brain damage are seriously symptomatic before the congestive heart failure begins. In wet beriberi, the heart starts to fail before the nerve and brain damage are obvious. Thankfully, today we see beriberi only in famine, people on binge drinks, abuse of children or the disabled, or extreme goofy diets.

Sexuality: While there is 'good' or 'bad' in medicine my reaction to this is that this activity is illegal in most places in america.  The desire to be sexual with animals may very well be a mental health problem and i would advise you to get to a sex therapist or to get in to discuss these feelings with your family doctor.

Varied reasons: Deliberately harming animals can sometimes be found in individuals who have an antisocial personality disorder.  It may provide these individuals with a perverse sense of pleasure. Some times people take out frustration or anger on their pets, because they feel unsafe taking it out on people.

Normal: One of my grandchildren is 23 and still has the teddy bear that i gave her at birth. It does not mean that the child thinks he'she is starved of affection.

Mental Illness: Someone who is mentally ill does not process information as others do.  Their behavior is not always logical or predictable.

Supervision: Many children are attracted to animals.  Teach your child that animals have feelings, don't like to be poked or prodded, and should be left alone while eating.  Teach your child to read the body language of pets (tails, ears, teeth, noises etc)  praise your child on remaining calm and allowing the unfamiliar animal to 'warm up' to him. Young children should not be left alone with an animal.
