Not exactly: Benadryl (diphenhydramine) is diphenydramine, an old first generation antihistamines that lasts about 6 hours and can cause drowsiness and other side effects.  Claritin (loratadine) is a new generation antihistamine that can last 24 hours and has less side effects.  At this time, there is no real advantage to benadryl, (diphenhydramine) unless a person also wants some sleep....

It depends: There is no absolute contraindication to giving both of these medications.  However, in a child, one needs to be careful about side effects.  If a child took a Claritin tablet for an allergic reaction but was not seeing improvement, Benadryl (diphenhydramine) can be given.  Claritin has a slower onset of action compared to benadryl (diphenhydramine).
