Could be: As it looks like musculoskeletal problem, kindly avoid pressing your sternum anymore, take NSAIDS, unless contraindicated , see your doctor too for assessment, good luck

Basics: Your ribs articulate (have a joint) with the sternum that is mostly cartilage in youth &amp; middle age. It is possible to have localized irritation/inflammation at any of the sternum points where the ribs join it. These often arise after a simple viral illness or from trauma. Anti-inflammatories may help with discomfort. It is not worth much thought &amp; should pass in time.

Maybe stress: Mental stress can cause aches and pains, and it can also make us notice "real" aches and pains more.  It's impossible to know the root cause over the internet, it could be a muscle strain, bruised rib, etc.  If it doesn't get better soon, please see a doctor in person.  You could also try aspirin, ibuprofen, or acetominophen (tylenol) to see if that helps.

Possible.: Most of the time its a muscle sprain. But rib fracture and sternum fracture possible which case pain more severe with each breath and movement. You should get an xray to rule it out.

Tough to say: Without an exam, really tough to tell, but guesses would be costochondritis, musculoskeletal strain/sprain, pyrosis (heart burn), esophogitis, anxiety, heart issues, etc.  Best for you to get dr to evaluate you.  Good luck.

See below.: In young healthy 23 yo without strong history of early familial coronary artery disease this is costochondritis - fancy name for pain in joints where ribs meet sternum.  Actually common in your age group.  Consider taking a nonsteroidal antiinflammatory agent in full doses for a week or more, methocarbamol, cyclobenzaprine and Gabapentin may work.

Rib pain: Need to know what happen to your sternum; what evaluation was done (exam, x rays etc); what medication were given etc.; what is your medical history. Ribs fractures are notorious for having lots of pain (maily sharp) which is frustrating. Fracture could take 6 weeks to heal. However, the best way to help is to see your doctor and make sure recovery is going well and nothing new develops.
