Nephrin is important because it helps prevent excessive protein leak  from occurring.

Maybe: Most people with type 1 dm lead relatively normal lives and become teachers, doctors, factoey workers and the like. Proteinuria varies in its importance from orthostatic (benign) to those with major kidney damage and progressive kidney failure. It is a bit early to write off a 13 year old as disabled with such a variable illness. With motivation & proper  care the kid could do wonderful things.
