had a fall yesterday & on blood thinner. did not hit my head i went down & fell onto my leg and behind, my hands caught a rail & took some impact. do i have any concerns being on thinners & my leg being in so much pain? or more so if you hit yourhead?

: Yes, deep bleeding with the formation of a hematoma is relatively common in such situations, not to mention pelvic fractures, always possible. Would suggest being timely examined ( either your doc or an urgent care office) for proper diagnosis and treatment.

is it okay to take motrin for relief from head trauma? i've heard that it can be called a blood thinner and those can increase bleeding in the brain.

Lack of clotting: There three mechanisms to control bleeding into the tissue from injury, 1. contraction of blood vessels, 2 Platelet aggregation to form a plug at the site of injury to the vessel, 3. Blood clot formation. If any one these is less than normal bleeding occurs in the tissue. Anti-coagulants impair blood clotting and a side effect is bleeding in the tissue, or easy bruising.

Accepted Answer

Yes: Hair loss of a variable degree can occur with warfarin (coumadin) use- it can range from thinning to major loss. Typically this is not common and hair regrwoth happens once the blood thinner is stopped. There are newer oral alternatives to warfarin which are available and their use can be discussed with your doctor.

Blood clot: A superficial clot does not require blood thinners. Only DVTs require blood thinnners.

: Antihistamines are not blood thinners. Cannot respond to the question as to whether it is OK to take whatever it is that you are taking. Please discuss this with your hair transplant sepcialist AND your primary doctor. Good luck.

Purpora of arms: It is very common when you are on a blood thinner like warfarin to have purplish or bluish discolorations in the arms, and occasionally on your face. These discolorations may go away or they may persist. They are completely benign. Make sure you are not on other types of blood thinners, like aspirin or Plavix (clopidogrel) that can cause them. As always, discuss with your health care provider.

Neither do: Fish oil does prolong bleeding time but not significantly, unless used in high doses usually combined with other anticoagulants like aspirin. Carrot juice, a good source of beta carotene, insignificantly affects bleeding time. Now, your broken eye vessels would not be expected to heal faster with the above, but may slightly increase bruising occurrence, particularly with subconjunctival hemorrhage

lipid test 1 month ago. i have high cholesterol, triglycerides, & high ldl. i have been walking an hour everyday for about a month now & looking after what i put in my mouth. im also taking blood thinner & statin. when to retest again ?

: All laboratory results need to be interpreted in the clinical context and the doctor who ordered the tests is usually in the best position to do that. Talk to the doctor who ordered the tests. Having said that, retesting at 3-6 months since starting your new routine would be useful.    Wish you good health!
