i have been clumsy all my life, tripping and falling down a lot. now that i have osteoporosis, im worried about breaking a bone when i fall. what can i do to improve my poor balance?

Many things: Make sure your osteoporosis is adequately treated.  Make sure your calcium and vitamin d level is normal.  Supplement if necessary.  Remove house hazards that can make you fall: maintain adequate lighting around the house, remove clutters that can make you trip around the house, remove movable carpets/rugs.  Install fall guards and handles in bathroom/bathtubs.

my 3 year old appears to be clumsy, always falling or losing his balance. could his legs be giving out on him?

Accepted Answer

Clumsy?: This could be an innocent problem, such as being like me and just being a clumsy person :) or it can also be from a medical condition, such as an orthopedic or neurological condition. Best to have your child undergo a physical exam to see if there is any type of anatomical deformity (of legs or feet) or abnormality on neurologic exam to explain the clumsiness. Further testing might be necessary.

See a neurologist: It's unclear whether you may have neurologic problems as a result of your infection.  Be sure to report your concerns to your regular doctor who can either refer you to a physical therapist or rehab medicine or a neurologist depending on the your primary care doctor's evaluation. Yes: Clumsiness and dizziness can be caused by inner ear and also cerebellar problems.  Add focusing problems and any number of problems causing encephalopathy in a young person should be considered.  Yes you should see a doc.

Progesterone: This hormone is dominant post ovulation weeks prior to menses. This hormone can cause fluid retention, and swelling in peripheral nerves, causing some of the problems you see

Get workup: Drowsiness, despite good sleep, may have physical or emotional origins.  Diabetes, for example, must be ruled out and depression must be evaluated.  See a trusted doctor--if you don't have one, call the local med society.

Discuss with PCP: Many kids at that age start accelerating when they are excited & don't quite have the stability to dart around so fast without taking a tumble. Sometimes it's related to their footwear. I find many do better barefoot or on skid socks than in clunky shoes. Either way your doc can see if there are stability problems or just too much energy.

Immediate Evaluation: Your child needs immediate evaluation.  Call pediatrician and if unable to see, report to closest emergency department.
