Breakthrough bleed: Breakthrough bleeding (bleeding at the wrong time)  is very common on birth control. It happens in about 1/3 of users. Its no big deal and usually self corrects over time.  If you are not satisfied or it continues to happen  then consider using a different birth control method. It is a common side effect and does not mean something is wrong or that the pill is not working.

Sex and bleeding: Sorry to say, but depends on whether or not you have been thoroughly evaluated. Btb is generally a term for irregular spotting on hormonal contraception. Hopefully, your md has already evaluated you for cervical dysplasia, endometrial polyps, fibroids, vaginitis, hormonal imbalance, and other causes of abnormal spotting. If you truly have btb, then whether to have sex is up to you & your partner.

It depends on: when the breakthrough is. The only time you are ever fertile is around ovulation; if you have some breakthrough then you're probably still perfectly fertile. At any other time you' re not fertile anyway, so the bleeding is irrelevant. Hope this helps.

Several reasons: There are several reasons a woman taking bcp for a year could suddenly start getting break through bleeding.  One is the lining of the uterus could be so thin and fragile that spotting just happens.  A change in bcp can help this.  Missing pills or being late on bcp can do it as can starting another medication.  I've occasionally seen going from one generic brand to another can cause it.

Incorrect term: The term is breakthrough bleeding. This is irregular bleeding that occurs exclusively in women on birth control. It just refers to bleed at the wrong time as a side effect of the hormones. One does not ovulate when on birth control.

depends: Breakthrough bleeding is what occurs when a woman on the pill has bleeding when she is taking the active pills and should not bleed.  She is said to have "break through" bleeding because the bleeding has broken through the control of the pill.

Double up: Your pills the next day but don't stop, otherwise you may experience a full-fledged withdrawal bleeding and will get out of sync with your next anticipated menstrual period.
