TENS: Is an acronym standing for transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation.  We've found that by over-stimulating certain nerves, it "short circuits" the pathway to perceive pain.

No: If a T.E.N.S. unit is giving you relief there is no harm done to you in using it for a long time. Compared to  many other things it is very safe.

Price: T.E.N.S units vary considerably in price.  If you are using it only for yourself you do not need to purchase a heavy duty clinic type unit.  You may need to purchase pads and gel.  These add to the price.  You may need a doctors prescription if you are going to ask Medicare to pay for it.  Otherwise you can shop online or medical supply store locally to see if you can find one you like.

Pain Management Unit: "tens" is the acronym for transcputaneous electrical nerve stimulation. A "tens unit" is a pocket size, portable, battery-operated device that sends electrical impulses to certain parts of the body to block pain signals.
The electrical currents produced are mild, but can prevent pain messages from being transmitted to the brain and may raise the level of endorphins.

Hand controls: The tens is adjusted by a hand held controller which usually contains the batteries.  You may need a little trial and error.  Our office uses the national company emsi which has sales reps that will personally instruct the patient.

Pain relief: Initially the muscles where the tens unit is attached will feel warm, and if the unit is on too high they may contract.   I it is set correctly you should feel less pain afterwards.

Doubtful: Not sure if it would have the same conductive qualities as recommended gel but additionally - it can sometimes cause skin irritation.

Tens therapy is a good nonsurgical alternative for painful TMJ problems, is relatively noninvasive and safe and effective for many patients. Other options include splint therapy, orthodontic treatment and even surgery.
