can augmentin decrease the effectiveness of birth control? can it cause you to spot on the pill due to this? im new to the pill so the spotting may be related to that. i was wondering on augmentin and birth control interaction since had label on it.

About antibiotics...: Many things are possible in life. That said, birth control pill hormones should still be effective. Amoxicillin, Augmentin, and other commonly-used antibiotics do not have a noticeable effect on the workings of hormonal contraceptives such as Implanon or birth control pills. Antibiotic Rifampin is not commonly used, but may have an effect on hormonal contraceptives.

im on low dose birth control. im spotting some. i am on augmentin 875 mg. could this be causing the spotting? im taking my birth control as prescribed everyday. thank you

BCP ?'s: Augmentin will not cause vaginal "spotting", but taking the low dose bcp's "as prescribed" daily may need to be more punctual, as in taking the active pills at the same hour that the prior active pill was taken, as the dose of hormones in the current pills are very low, and even slight deviations in the time taken may result in breakthrough bleeding.

if i took my last dose of augmentin on a monday, had sex thursday is it out of my system by then? i am on birth control and have been taking it the entire time. would there be any possibility of pregnancy? thank you?

: Certain antibiotics do have some influence on absorption of the hormones in oral bcp's, but not significant enough to compromise the contraceptive effect.  The "placebo" week after 21 active pills, still prevents loss of protection for seven days before ovulation can sometimes occur.

No : You can not get pregnant from having oral sex. Augmentin (amoxicillin and clavulanate) will not protect you from sexual transmitted diseases that you can get from oral sex. You would need to use a condom.

Abx and Birth contro: To be on the safe side, use back up birth control until the next cycle.

Spotting: Clavulanate  can interfere with effectiveness of birth control medication and it is quite possible that it has interacted with the hormone and decreased its effective concentration in your blood which has caused you to spot. This is also why it is always advisable to use a backup method of birth control while on such antibiotics.

Depends on partner and any infection being carried.
